I Monitoring Water Quality at a Food Waste Composting Site

چکیده
In 1993, the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison (located near Jackson, GA) initiated an on-site composting operation to convert food waste into a useable by-product. Each week, inmates compost about 20 tons of food waste, which are mixed with ground cardboard, hay, yard leaves, or wood products. The operation takes place on a 1.2-ha site (3 acres) that drains towards a small, paermial stream. Because of the potential for contaminating surface and ground waters with nutrients derived from the compost, we initiated a study in 1997 to monitor the quality of surface runoff and groundwater at the site.

Evaluation of In-vessel Composting of University Postconsumer Food Wastes
A prototype in-vessel composting unit, which includes air circulation and misting systems, was designed and built as a senior capstone project at the Bio-Resource Engineering Department at the University of Maine. The university Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery initiated a recycling program for postconsumer food waste generated by the residence hall commons areas in 1991. This food ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Aerated Container Composting of University Preconsumer and Postconsumer Food Waste
Composting of food waste generated from the University of Georgia’s cafeterias was evaluated using an agitated aerated composting system. The goal of the project was to determine if all of the University’s food waste could be recycled using six Earth Tubs. Secondary evaluations investigated the amount of leachate produced, odor generated, speed of composting, quality of compost, cost savings to...
متن کاملOn-site Composting of Restaurant Organic Waste: Economic, Ecological, and Social Costs and Benefits
On-site composting is examined as an alternative method of organic waste disposal in San Francisco Bay Area restaurants. Since 74% of an average restaurant’s waste stream is compostable material, composting and reuse of organic material would redirect a significant portion of the waste stream from landfills. Economic, ecological, and social costs and benefits of three methods of organic waste d...
متن کاملComposting and Recycling Urban Food Wastes in Korea With Effective Microorganisms
Food waste which accounts for approximately 30 percent of urban garbage was collected from selected cities of Korea and treated with EM in household recycling and demonstration programs. The quantity of garbage was reduced significantly with no malodors commonly associated with refuse fermentation. The fermented food waste can be used beneficially as an organic fertilizer for crop production. T...
متن کاملRescuing Food from the Organics Waste Stream to Feed the Food Insecure: An Economic and Environmental Assessment of Australian Food Rescue Operations Using Environmentally Extended Waste Input-Output Analysis
In this paper we investigate the economic and environmental efficiency of charities and NGO’s “rescuing” food waste, using a 2008 case study of food rescue organisations in Australia. We quantify the tonnages, costs, and environmental impact of food rescued, and then compare food rescue to other food waste disposal methods composting and landfill. To our knowledge this is the first manuscript t...
